TDLR : Skaven mixed-arms is as strong as ever. Krittok and Vermins good. Hellpit disapointing. 6 Ratlings is enough.
This weekend I was a soldier of fortune for some Briton friends of mine (The Poets of Brest). We fought bravely during a team event opposing teams from all around France that wanted to climb the ranks and enter the glorious « Ligue 1 ». Our roaster suffered multiple last-minute drops of players, but we gave it all nonetheless.

As I wasn’t with my usual coach, we made the choice of a more solo-oriented list to ease the pairing process :
Skaven | Warpcog Convocation | 1980/2000 pts | 2 drops
Spell Lore – Lore of Ruin | Manifestation Lore – Manifestions of Doom
Regiment 1
Krittok (180)
• General
Clanrats (150)
Clanrats (150)
Stormvermin (240)
• Reinforced
Clawlord (80)
• Warpstone Charm
• Short-tempered
Regiment 2
Thanquol (360)
Ratling Guns (340)
• Reinforced
Doom-Flayers (260)
• Reinforced
Hell Pit Abomination (220)
It went quite smoothely, 4 wins and 1 loss, 7th best scorer, which was quite a surprise as the first assumption was that it would score a lot less than a 12 Ratlings list.
Game 1 :
– Blade of Khorne, 40 Bloodwarriors + 10 Skullreapers
– Feral Foray
– 12/8
For the Khorne player to win against Skaven, he has to play really agressively and outflank the Skaven screens. Here he went-in units after units which allows for trade always in favor of the Skaven side.
Game 2 :
– Kharadron Overlord, 24 Endrinriggers + Brokk + 2 Frigates
– Jaws of Gallet
– 12/8
Lost the toss so did the minimum amount of points turn 1 and played as defensively as possible. The main difficulty here is to not crave blood, the first one to go-in will loose so I waited in obscuring terrains.
Game 3 :
– Skaven, Vizzik + Rats + 6 Scourgers
– The better part of Valor
– 15/5
I’ve always thought of Vizzik lists as a false good idea, and this game was not enough to change my opinions. Vizzik rolled a total of five 1s and when the stars finally aligned (crit mortals + fight twice on 40 clanrats) they struggled to impress me as my opponent lost more clock time that he did damage.
Game 4 :
– Blade of Khorne, 40 Bloodwarriors + 10 Skullreapers
– Battle for the Pass
– 17-3
Battle for the Pass is THE scenario where I love to face all-melee army. The layout allows for some insane board clogging with Gnawholes and forces the opponent to over-commit if he ever want to touch the objectives. He did and got doubled.
Game 5 :
– Disciple of Tzeench, 2 Birds + Horrors + 6 Flamers
– Scorched Earth
– 9-11
Lost the toss and panicked (as always against Tzeench). I played the scenario horrendously by establishing a bunker in my opponent’s territory and then burning the objectives for no reason.
What to keep of those games :
– Krittok’s double clawstep ability was surprisingly useful, especially in combination with a field-sergeant, I used it at least twice per game.
– A core of Thanquol + 6 Ratlings + 4 Flayers is enough to punish mistakes hard and score plenty, 12 Ratlings aren’t that needed anymore.
– The Hellpit did not perform well, even in infantry-heavy matchups it was a chore to pilot and a sinkhole of ressources.
– Vermins are great, and I’m tired of saying otherwise, but they should be seen as what they are : a jack-of-all trade unit in a toolbox army. As long as you don’t expect too much from them, they will do their job.
